American excess, part 378

The young child of a friend of ours got a Build-A-Bear. I don't know if you've seen those before - they are from "workshops" where kids can build their own teddy bear. The bears are very expensive.

I could not believe these bear shoes - real Sketchers. They would actually function for some child, if the child had strange club-like teddy bear-sized feet.

And apparently, later, you can go back and buy accessories for your little bear. At additional great expense.

I am not a teddy bear, stuffed animal person. I hate them, actually. They are a waste of money and just end up in the give-away bag.

I was disheartened to see my eldest son shop at build-a-bear for his girlfriend for valentine's day. All my 16 years of teddy-bear-hating indoctrination seemed to have not paid off.

In the realm of teddy bear shopping, the bears themselves are actually not that expensive, at least for the low-end models. It's the clothing and accessories that pack a punch. I think the bears have even gotten cheaper over time, but they probably raised the other prices to compensate!

Typical marketing ploy. Suck the consumer in with a tempting low sticker price, then pile on the options they can't live without.

I guess this is the 2008 equivalent of Cabbage Patch dolls. According to NPR, today (15-Feb) is the anniverary of the first Teddy's Bear.
